Student Design work: Mirim Seo - Ugly Fruit
“The idea came from the fact that US markets toss out 15 billion dollars worth of fruits and vegetables each year just because they are bruised or discolored. But they are still fresh and edible. I felt there was an opportunity to stop the waste, so Ugly Fruit was born. Ugly Fruit is a stand that makes juice, jams, and dried fruits out of unattractive produce donated from our neighbourhood grocery stores. Ugly fruit, pretty yummy!”

Design student Ric Bixter came up with this idea for elastic band packaging.
The design brief was to “Go into a pound shop and pick a seemingly uninteresting object and rebrand it, increasing the value and interest.”
The stronger the band, the more the box is squeezed. Brilliant!
Ric Bixter is a 2nd year design student at UCLan (University of Central Lancashire). He’s hoping to move to London in September for a year in the profession. Catch him on Twitter @fellbridge.
Back in June he tweeted, “Designing the packaging for elastic bands turns out to be really hard.”
Nice work Ric- we really like what you have done here, we also really liked the actual design brief .

As well as graphic and packaging design, I am fascinated by new media and marketing, here I aim to pull together the best of this plus great online design "finds". Enjoy!
